GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHERS

#2: "Dzien oczyszczenia" [1969]

JERZY LIPMAN

Born: 10 April 1922, Brześć nad Bugiem/Brest-on-the-Bug [Brześć Litewski/Brest-Litovsk], Poland [now Brest, Belarus].

Died: 11 November 1983, London, UK.

Education: PWSFTviT, Lódz [1948-52].

Career: Wounded while fighting for the Polish underground during WW2. Later imprisoned by the Russians. Started as c.asst. Left Poland in 1969 and went to West Germany.

Awards: German Film Award in Gold [1972] for 'Das falsche Gewicht'.

'Some of the most memorable visuals of 1950s/60s European cinema came via the camera of Jerzy Lipman. 'Kanal', with its sweaty, tightly-framed shots of violence in the sewers of war-torn Warsaw; a lone white mare called Lotna on a misty plane; bleak, empty landscapes of the lake and shoreline in 'Knife in the Water' - just three examples to illustrate the versatility of a man rightly called in his time Poland's greatest cameraman. But his became a career of lost opportunities. Whatever Lipman's reasons for leaving Poland (political? professional?), cinematically it was a disastrous move.' [Markku Salmi in 'Film Dope', #35, September 1986.]
