Born: 18 June 1976, Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy.
Education: Università di Bologna, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia [Faculty of Arts and Humanities], DAMS [Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo/Drama, Art and Music Studies] [1996]. Graduated (MA) in 2004 with the degree thesis 'Giuseppe Rotunno: Cinematographer's Theories and Practices'.
Career: 'As young as 13 and intrigued by the amateur cameras brought home by my father, I started making movies and then finding ingenious ways to edit them. I moved to Bologna at age 19 to attend the University degree classes of DAMS. Joining forces with other students, I worked as an assistant grip on a number of short films that unveiled to me an unknown world: the film set. Another aspect of filmmaking that fascinated me was post-production, or better editing. The University had one of the first AVID digital editing systems, and there were very few people who knew how to use it. The editor who introduced us to the AVID was Fabio Bianchini Pepegna. I started working with him as an assistant. I was assistant editor and editor until 2002. In the past I loved to visit and work on film sets, and also studying here and there to learn the basics of cinematography. During the few days I did not work, I shot some short films for friends and used the alias 'Jonny Mancuso'. In early 2003, I started working for free [or almost for free] for anyone who wanted to make independent short films and who were looking for a director of photography. After some experience with Super 8, I shot my first short film on Super-16: 'Al mare' directed by Vito Palmieri. Impressed by the quality of that film, director Pippo Mezzapesa asked me to become the doph on his movie 'Zinanà', another Super-16 short, that won a 'David di Donatello' Award in 2004 and brought me to the attention of industry professionals. 2003 was a crucial year. I met doph Paolo Carnera and I watched him working on the set of 'L'amore ritorna' directed by Sergio Rubini. Thanks to Carnera I could fill many gaps and a new world unveiled in front of me.'
