JUDY IROLA ASC |
Born: 23 November 1943, Fresno, Calif., USA, as Judith Carol Irola, daughter of Basque sheepherders.
Education: Central California Commercial College, Fresno, Calif., USA.
Career: Moved to London, UK, and worked there as a secretary. Became librarian at an air force base in Sevilla, Spain. Served with the US Peace Corps in Niger, Africa [1966-68]. In 1968 she became a secretary at KQED-tv, the PBS affiliate in San Francisco; was transferred into the camera department and began shooting a PBS-tv doc series and KQED's nightly news. In 1972 she joined the Marxist film collective 'Cine Manifest'. Moved to New York in 1978 and ph news, doc's and entertainment for US and European tv-stations in Brazil, Jamaica, Cuba, France, Poland, Mozambique, Kenya, the Soviet Union and throughout the USA. Returned to California in 1989 and became associate professor [1992] and head of Cinematography [since September 1999] at the School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California [USC]. She was named the Conrad Hall Endowed Chair in Cinematography and Color Timing at USC in October 2005. She is cred on numerous student films as 'faculty advisor'.

Was member of the IDFA jury, Amsterdam, 1988, and of the Ojai FF jury, 2000.
Worked on the project '20th Century Fox - Storytelling, Murals, and Film' in Los Angeles in 1997-98 producing a b&w video with Gardner Monks and children of the Melrose Avenue Elementary School.
An interview with her appeared in the book 'Women Behind the Camera - Conversations with Camerawomen' by Alexis Krasilovsky [1997].
