Born: 7 August 1950, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Education: University of Waterloo [Political Science]; York University, Toronto [Filmmaking; 1970-73].

Career: 'My father was a metallurgist for the Royal Canadian Navy. He was also the superintendent of Sunday schools run by the United Church of Canada. When I was five or six years old, I was shown how to thread the filmstrip projector used at our Sunday school. He put me in charge of setting it up and threading it. One day I looked at the image in the gate and realized it was upside down and backward. I took it upon myself to unthread and respool it so it ended up in the gate right side up and frontward. Of course, it was projected upside down and backwards. That was my first lesson about optics. [...] There was an audio-visual department at school. I became the AV geek who pushed the little cart with the 16mm film, slide and filmstrip projectors from schoolroom to schoolroom. That led me to an interest in taking pictures. I began shooting little movies in 1963 or '64. We bought a Bolex Double 8 camera.' After graduating from the university, he went to work for Alar Kivilo. 'We were shooting short-ends with a big old Mitchell camera. It was actually a very low budget porno film. Jock Brandis, a gaffer who owned some lights, was the director of photography. Alar was the operator, because he knew how to use a gear head. I was the assistant. That first film led to other work. I bought a CP16 reflex camera around 1976 and was shooting very low budget films. I caught a break when Ed Hunt directed a film called 'Point of No Return'. He had an argument with the cinematographer who got angry and threw his light meter into the harbor and walked off the set on Thanksgiving Day. I got a call while I was home carving the turkey. Ed asked if I could take over that night. The following year I shot a science fiction film called 'Starship Invasions'. It was the first feature I shot in 35mm format.' Ph 16mm doc's and industrial films. Moved to Santa Barbara, California, USA, in 1987.

Joined the CSC in 1970 as a film student. Became active member of the ASC in 1992. Appeared in the CD-ROM 'Movie School Encyclopedia' [a crash course on how to prod, dir, write, shoot and edit movies] of the Cyber Film School and the doc's 'Cinematographer Style' [2005, Jon Fauer; ph: J. Fauer, Jeff Laszlo, Brian Heller & David Morgan] & 'Northern Lights' [2008, dir/ph by Antonio Galloro; 90m].

Awards: CSC Award [1983] & 'Genie' Award nom [1984] for 'Videodrome’; CSC Award [1984] for 'The Dead Zone'; CSC Award [1985] for 'Youngblood'; CSC Award [1986] for 'The Fly'.
