'Capote' photography director Adam Kimmel arrested on weapons and explosive possession charges
Published: Saturday, April 24, 2010 - By Ronald Derosa, The Register Citizen.
BANTAM - State police said they found a rifle, fireworks and illegal explosives during a search at the Salisbury home of Adam J. Kimmel, the photography director of the Oscar-winning film 'Capote' who was arraigned on risk of injury charges earlier this week.
Detectives from the Western District Major Crime Squad executed a search and seizure warrant on April 15 at Kimmel's 227 Taconic Road home in Salisbury, according to an arrest warrant obtained Friday. The 49-year-old cinematographer allegedly had a .22 Iver Johnson rifle and 137 rounds of .22 magnum caliber ammunition in his room, the warrant stated.
Police said they also found a variety of fireworks and explosive devices next to a desk in the second floor hallway of the house.
Police were investigating Kimmel in connection with a sexual assault complaint lodged by a 15-year-old juvenile on March 22. Following a month-long investigation Kimmel was arrested in New York City on April 20. After appearing in Manhattan Superior Court, he was extradited to Connecticut on charges of risk of injury, fourth-degree sexual assault and failing to register as a sex offender.
Kimmel, who is a registered sex offender in New York, was convicted in 2004 after pleading guilty to third-degree rape of a 17-year-old. As part of his 10-year probation, Kimmel was prohibited from possession firearms in Connecticut, court documents stated.
While being extradited back to Litchfield County to answer the sex charges, Kimmel allegedly told police the rifle was his elderly father's who didn't want it anymore in his New York home. Kimmel said he rarely used it, court documents stated.
Kimmel was arrested early Friday morning on charges of criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of fireworks and illegal possession of explosives.
During his arraignment in Bantam Superior Court, Judge Corinne L. Klatt reduced his $250,000 bond to $5,000. The case was transferred to Litchfield Superior Court for a May 4 appearance, to coincide with other pending risk of injury charges.
Attorney David Moraghan is representing him on the sex case. Kimmel remains at liberty on a $105,000 bond, which includes $100,000 bond posted previously on the risk of injury charges and the $5,000 firearms bond.
Kimmel has been a resident of Salisbury since 1991, police said. He also has listed address of 111 4th Ave. in New York City.
