Steve Yedlin: 'My background is in lighting. I worked as a gaffer for years. This experience, along with careful study of favorite movies for lighting, composition and coverage, has made for an indispensable education in cinematography. Each job I did as a gaffer was a learning experience, whether or not the DP's affinities in aesthetics and tactics aligned with my own. Probably more important than learning what one must do, I learned what one doesn't necessarily have to do. I became comfortable, for example, with actors going into silhouette or eyes being dark at times. Framing should be approached in the same way: the main character can be small in the frame or have his back to the camera while speaking or have an unusually large amount of head-room. These are all fine, and it's part of a cameraman's job to protect a director from talking himself out of his own fine ideas for shot design because of convention.
What I've learned by working as a gaffer cannot be quantified, but, perhaps, my most cherished learning method in understanding photography for storytelling, a method that is always evolving, is the process of working with directors whom I respect. A thoughtful and talented director, whatever his methods, influences and tastes, is a vital conductor of the over-determined lexicon of visual language. He can serve to focus, magnify, intuit and convey the apparently manifold and unmanageably disparate aspects of filmmaking into a unity which is the final movie.'
