Born:
15 August 1928, London, UK, as Nicolas Jack Roeg.
After
National Service he joined the film industry as tea-maker and clapper-boy ['The
Miniver Story', 1950, H.C. Potter; ph: Joseph Ruttenberg] at Marylebone
Studios, working his way up to c.op on Ken
Hughes's 'The Trials of Oscar Wilde' [1959;
ph: Ted Moore], Fred Zinnemann's
'The Sundowners' [1959; ph: Jack Hildyard], etc. Became doph
in 1960. Moved into direction in 1968, paired with the painter and writer Donald
Cammell on 'Performance'. Cockney accents,
graphic violence, a sympathetic view of London's hallucinatory drug culture, and
a complex narrative concerned with identity and power, proved too heady a brew
for Warner Bros. executives
and the release of the film was delayed for two years. By that time Roeg was in
Australia directing and photographing 'Walkabout', his solo
debut. Was
married
to actress Theresa Russell [1982-?]. Received many awards/nominations,
e.g. BAFTA Film Award nom [1968] for 'Far from the Madding Crowd', BAFTA
Film Award nom 'Best Director' [1974] for 'Don't Look Now', Cannes FF 'Palme
d'or' nom [1985] for 'Insignificance' & British Independent Film
Award 'Lifetime Achievement Award' [1999]. [Using quotes from article by Neil

"Annapolis
Farewell" [1935] |
Born:
3 June 1903, Los Angeles, Calif., USA, as Dale H. Tetzlaff, son of racecar
driver 'Terrible' Teddy H. Tetzlaff [1883-1929].
Died:
7 January 1995, Fort Baker, Calif., USA.
Entered
the film industry as a lab assistant before becoming a c.asst. Became doph in
1926. Directed his first film, 'World Premiere', in 1941, but the onset
of World War II drew him into the army, where he achieved the rank of major. On
his return to civilian life, he returned to the cinematographer's spot on films
like 'The Enchanted Cottage' [1944] and 'Notorious', before switching to directing permanently in
1947. Retired at the end of the 1950s. Received an 'Oscar' AA nom [1942; b&w] for 'The Talk of the Town'.
The extremely well
photographed and staged film noir 'The Window'
[based on a story by Cornell Woolrich] is considered his best directorial
effort. 'Set in the tenement section of
New York's Lower East Side, this incredibly tense nail-biter stars Bobby
Driscoll as a young boy who has a habit of 'crying wolf'. One night, while trying
to beat the heat by making his bed on the fire escape, he climbs up to the next
floor and sees his neighbors murder a drunken seaman. Of course, no one, not
even the boy's parents, believes him. Director and onetime cameraman Tetzlaff
adroitly injects a maximum of suspense into the film, enabling the audience to
identify with the boy's predicament. By casting the 12-year-old Driscoll,
Tetzlaff was able to twist the idyllic Disney image of childhood into a
nightmare world of death and violence, in which parents and neighbors are the
child's worst fears come true. Adding to the film's effect is the on-location
photography and the dark ambience of the tenements, where evil and death seem to
lurk in every shadow and where the pursued boy is nearly killed. 'The Window',
which cost only $210,000 to produce and made many times that at the box office,
was voted the best mystery film of the year by the Mystery Writers of America.
An exceptional film.' [From TV Guide.]
